Le Carré’s 2001 novel concerns a British diplomat, Justin Quayle, struggling to uncover the details of his activist wife’s murder. The book is loosely based on real events surrounding clinical trials of AIDS drugs in Nigeria in the 1990s, and Quayle’s investigations uncover a conspiracy that involves (among others) his own government.
